Acclaimed actor Andre Braugher, celebrated for his iconic roles as Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street, has passed away at the age of 61. His publicist confirmed the news of his demise on Monday following a brief illness.

Braugher’s career soared to prominence with his portrayal of the tenacious Detective Frank Pembleton in the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Street, earning him an Emmy in 1998.

However, his deadpan performance as Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine solidified his status as a household name. Winning two Critics Choice Awards and receiving four Emmy nominations for his role, Braugher charmed audiences with his portrayal of the precinct’s no-nonsense, Black, and gay boss.

Born in 1962 in Chicago, Braugher’s career trajectory saw him excel both on the big screen and television. His debut film role in 1989’s Glory, where he played a Union soldier in one of the earliest African American regiments of the Civil War, earned him acclaim and set the stage for a prolific career.

Throughout his three-decade journey in the entertainment industry, he amassed 11 Emmy nominations, securing victories in 1998 for Homicide: Life on the Street and in 2006 for the miniseries Thief.
