John Boyega to Star in The Book of Eli Prequel Series

A prequel series to the 2010 post-apocalyptic film The Book of Eli is currently in development, featuring John Boyega, known for his role in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, as the lead.

According to Deadline, Boyega will not only play the character of Eli, originally portrayed by Denzel Washington in the movie, but also serve as an executive producer for the series. Gary Whitta, the writer of the film, is on board as the creator, writer, and executive producer. The original film’s directors, Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes, will also be executive producers.

The Book of Eli Prequel Series to Star John Boyega

The upcoming series is set to take place around 30 years before the events of the film, coinciding with the nuclear event that led to the world’s destruction. Alcon Entertainment is producing the show, and it is currently in the process of being presented to select premium buyers.

The Book of Eli, released on January 15, 2010, starred Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, Jennifer Beals, Frances de la Tour, and Michael Gambon. Despite receiving mixed critical reviews, the film grossed $157.1 million at the box office.

What is The Book of Eli about?

“Thirty years after war turned the world into a wasteland, a lone warrior named Eli (Denzel Washington) marches across the ruined landscape, carrying hope for humanity’s redemption,” reads the film’s synopsis. “Only one other man (Gary Oldman) understands the power of what Eli carries, and he is determined to take it for himself. Though Eli prefers peace, he will risk death to protect his precious cargo, for he must fulfill his destiny to help restore mankind.”
