Perry Mason Canceled After 2 Seasons, HBO Issues Statement

HBO has made the decision to not renew the television series adaptation of Perry Mason for a third season. The cancellation follows the conclusion of the show’s eight-episode second season, which starred Matthew Rhys and is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.

In a statement released by HBO, they expressed gratitude for the exceptional work of Matthew Rhys and the entire cast and crew of Perry Mason. The network acknowledged the reimagining of the beloved and iconic franchise. While there won’t be another season of the series, HBO expressed excitement about collaborating with the talented team at Team Downey on future projects.

Perry Mason, based on Erle Stanley Gardner’s book series, was written and executive produced by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, who also served as showrunners. The executive producers included Matthew Rhys, Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Joe Horacek, and Regina Heyman.

The show featured an ensemble cast led by Emmy winner Matthew Rhys, along with Juliet Rylance, Chris Chalk, Shea Whigham, Eric Lange, and Justin Kirk. Season 2 introduced new cast members such as Katherine Waterston, Hope Davis, Jon Chaffin, Fabrizio Guido, Peter Mendoza, Onahoua Rodriguez, and Jee Young Han.

The second season’s storyline delved into a new murder case, unfolding after the conclusion of the Dodson case. The characters of Perry, Della, and Paul found themselves entangled in a complex investigation that exposed far-reaching conspiracies, challenging their understanding of guilt and innocence.

Though the journey of Perry Mason on HBO has come to an end, fans can look forward to future collaborations between HBO and the talented individuals at Team Downey.
