Scream 6 Reveals Longest Runtime in Slasher Franchise’s History

Scream 6 is perhaps the most anticipated horror release of 2023, and long-time fans of the franchise have been hungry for information regarding the newest installment ahead of its March release date. Following the wildly successful release of the film’s trailer last month, more news has come to the surface regarding the film’s runtime.

According to Regal Cinema and confirmed by Paramount, Scream VI will have the longest runtime of the films in the Scream franchise, at 123 minutes, or just over two hours. In comparison, the previous Scream films were slightly shorter at 1 hour and 51 minutes for Scream and Scream 4, 1 hour and 54 minutes for Scream 3 and Scream 5, and two hours exactly for Scream 2.

While bigger doesn’t always mean better in terms of films, the longer runtime of the next installment of the horror classic might indicate to fans that the film could be epic in proportion compared to other horror films.

Regardless of how the new film weaves together fan-favorite characters from the Scream franchise facing off against an all-new Ghostface, the iconic villain is sure to be deadlier than ever before. Creepy additions to the iconic Ghostface include a “Batcave”-like Ghostface shrine that links all six Scream films with endless Easter eggs and references. The shrine, as seen in the previously released trailer, pays homage to the franchise’s history and the scope of the newest Ghostface murder plot. Thankfully, a longer runtime should give the masked slasher plenty of time to put his plan together and give our team of heroes plenty of time to foil it.

What We Know About Scream 6

Scream 6 Reveals Longest Runtime in Slasher Franchise's History

Scream 6 is still a month away from the big screen, but given what we’ve seen in the trailer, the longer runtime might be necessary to encompass everything that directors Matt Bettinelli-Oplin and Tyler Gillett hope to accomplish in the latest sequel. Sisters Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) will return to the latest installment, set in NYC shortly after the events of Scream V. Barrera and Ortega will be joined on screen by Mason Gooding (Chad) and Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy) as well as returning favorites from earlier installments including Courteney Cox’s Gal Weathers and Hayden Panettiere’s Kirby Reed. Unfortunately, Scream final girl Neve Campbell will be notably absent from the latest installment, as this will be the first that does not feature her iconic character, Sidney Prescott.
