Dr. Shaun Murphy is set to conclude his interactions with patients in 2024 as ABC officially announced that the upcoming seventh season of The Good Doctor will be its last. The medical drama, produced by Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature, is scheduled to premiere on February 20.
Adding to the conclusion of The Good Doctor, another ABC drama, Station 19, a first responder-focused spinoff of Grey’s Anatomy, will also wrap up its run with a seventh season this season.
“The Good Doctor has been a once in a lifetime opportunity, but it’s time to say goodbye, co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman and fellow executive producer Erin Gunn said in a statement. “We are incredibly proud of the work we’ve done and the message we’ve been privileged to be a part of. We look forward to giving our fantastic fans, the truly extraordinary Freddie Highmore, the rest of our talented actors (and friends), and the best crew in the business the series ending that you all deserve. Thank you, Sony; thank you, ABC; thank you all.”
Highmore, also an executive producer of the series, expressed his gratitude, saying, “Portraying Dr. Shaun Murphy has been an incredible privilege and one of the most extraordinary and fulfilling experiences of my life. I am forever thankful to David, Liz, and Erin, as well as the immensely talented and wonderful cast, writers, and crew who brought this show to life. Our genuine care and dedication brought us to this point. A heartfelt thank you to Sony and ABC, and to everyone who followed along from home. Sending love from Vancouver… tequila, stat!”
Throughout its six seasons, The Good Doctor consistently delivered strong ratings for ABC. The show achieved an average of 6.24 million viewers in Nielsen’s seven-day ratings for the 2022-23 season. It’s worth noting that these figures do not include streaming, which typically adds an additional 30 to 40 percent more viewers to the linear total of a network series over seven days.
