While it’s yet to be confirmed if Russell Crowe will reprise his starring role, he previously hinted at his interest in returning for the sequel. In an interview with The Six O’Clock Show, Crowe mentioned that a sequel was initially planned, and discussions are ongoing despite recent leadership changes at the studio. He believes there’s potential for more films due to the character’s versatility and the abundance of source material from Gabriele Amorth’s 12 books.
The Pope’s Exorcist, directed by Julius Avery and based on Father Gabriele Amorth’s writings, follows the Vatican’s leading exorcist (played by Crowe) as he unravels a sinister conspiracy. Despite mixed critical reviews, the film resonated strongly with audiences, becoming a cult favorite and garnering significant international box office success.
Russell Crowe revealed what drew him to the horror film, saying, “The main reason [I was attracted to the film] was Father Amorth’s life story. I found it incredibly fascinating… He was the Vatican’s chief exorcist and he wrote 12 books about his experiences. Having that wealth of firsthand accounts as source material greatly appealed to me.” (via CBR)
The Pope’s Exorcist raked in $20 million in the United States and Canada combined. In comparison, its international run amassed a staggering $57 million, culminating in a global box office haul of $77 million, an impressive performance considering its $18 million production budget.
