When Tom Cruise Almost Lost His Head on Set

Tom Cruise is known for performing his own stunts in films, and while it may make for a more authentic viewing experience, it can also be incredibly dangerous.

In fact, there have been multiple instances where Cruise has come dangerously close to serious injury or even death while filming.

One such instance occurred during the filming of “The Last Samurai” in Taipei, Taiwan.

According to co-star Hiroyuki Sanada, Cruise almost lost his head during the filming of a fight scene. Sanada lost control of his weapon and nearly struck Cruise in the neck with his sword.

The crew watching from the side all screamed in horror, thinking Cruise’s head would be decapitated. However, Sanada managed to miss Cruise by just half an inch, sparing his life.

“Tom’s neck was right in front of me, and I tried to stop swinging my sword, but it was hard to control with one hand,” he said (note: the two were also on mechanical horses during the take). “The film crew watching from the side all screamed because they thought Tom’s head would fly off.”
